The key issues relate to safety of personnel, particularly process workers and people working with noisy equipment and machinery. Noise reduction is also important for the comfort of people living close-by, particularly where industrial processes are situated in, or close to, residential areas. Typical acoustic applications can include everything from insulation of offices close to noisy processes and installation of acoustic enclosures or acoustic havens for workers, to the insulation of plant operating at a range of temperatures.
- Combined performance
Insulation systems in industry rarely have a single purpose, and therefore insulation products for acoustic purposes will often have to fulfil a range of performance requirements including thermal insulation and fire protection. Installation can also be challenging, particularly in space limited situations where equipment is installed close together, in which case flexibility, ease of handling and the ability to offer high levels of performance at lower thicknesses can be important.

Individual solutions will depend on whether the sound is structure-borne (impact sound), or airborne, and it will be very important to identify the type of sound involved and its properties. In virtually every case, the solution will be more efficient in reducing sound problems if it is considered at the design stage of the process, and implemented during the construction phase.
As the name suggests, this is transmitted through air. The source is generally easy to identify and transmission is propagated directly via air to the receiver, by vibration of air molecules. However, if there is a wall or barrier between the source and the receiver, the sound is transmitted into the construction and then radiated into the air again on the other side of the obstruction. Examples include the human voice, emissions from process equipment and sound transmission along duct networks.
The result of impact or shock to the building structure that produces vibrations transmitted through the structural elements. Typical examples of this type of noise are footsteps on floors, doors closing and vibrations produced by operating machinery which are transmitted through structural supports.
